Who is successful?
Sunday is the best day of the week. I lie in bed reading the Sunday papers, skimming through stories that range from general interest through to politics and business. I skip gossip, but spend time reading real estate and travel. I start the day with the herbal tea and usually head out for breakfast with friends in search of the perfect coffee.
Today, I dined at Cosi in Toorak Road with my good friend Michelle and one of my oldest friends Nicole. We enjoyed chatting about everything from numerology through to insights into our personality types.
This ‘girly’ conversation led to Nicole and I deciding to head down to St Kilda to see a Tarot Reader just for a giggle. You see, Nicole is fascinated by numerology and tarot reading – so her passion in this area always gets me going.
Of course, like my previous experiences, the Tarot Reader told me that I am going to be incredibly happy, rich, successful and meet the man of my dreams who absolutely adores me. What else could I possibly want in life? Sounds too good to be true and since I have had pretty much the same reading for the past 5 years, I am not sure that all of these things are going to happen – at least not at once.
Nevertheless, I walked away happy and reassured that life is going to be just dandy.
Nicole’s reading was different, but it was what she was looking for, so it was $60 well spent.
After heading back to my place, Nicole and I started talking business. Nicole runs a successful business for micro businesses looking to make their own websites. She provides a workshop that teaches people how to use templates to build your own website.
I have known Nicole for over 20 years and am pleased to call her one of my best friends. She has a heart of gold and not only looks like Meg Ryan, but has the same innocent, goofy charm.
She is married to a wonderful man and has two gorgeous children. She is happy and yet she wants more. She is seriously ambitious and wants to build a business that gives her freedom to do other things like give back to the community.
Her business is very good and she has alot of potential in growing this business internationally. Her website workshops gives buddying entrepreneurs the opportunity to learn how to put together their own websites and manage it themselves. It’s great for someone that doesn’t have too much money to invest online, but knows they need to be online.
To me, she is successful. Yet to her, she has a long way to go.
Who is really successful? Is it the person that has a career that earns them lots of money, or the person who fulfils their lifelong dreams – no matter what they are? Or, is it having a happy and healthy family?
I look at my life and often I stand back and realise that many of my own dreams have been met and sometimes exceeded – yet, I don’t feel successful because I am not sure what success really means.
I look at business people that have achieved milestones I would only dream of, but have sacrified family to do so. They are successful in one way and not in others.
Everyone has their own definition of successful and maybe sometimes we need to take a look at ourselves and make this definition more real.
Being a good person, having a fulfilling career and a family you care about seems pretty successful to me. More people should look at their lives and not be so hard on themselves. Success doesn’t have to come in the form you expect it to.
