Three ways you can tweet your way to success
Small businesses are the biggest benefactors of Twitter. As a small business tweeter, I have been amazed, flattered and thrilled with how well Twitter works for both my business and sometimes my ego.
Named as a Top 100 Marketer To Follow On Twitter and the 33rd most popular tweeter in Sydney (well behind number one: Hugh Jackman), Twitter has been the source for numerous media call-outs whereby journalists directly mail me through Twitter and request interviews, sales leads that convert to dollars simply because the person seeking our services already knows us (through Twitter), a jump in visitors to our websites and interaction with people from the industry that I would never have known existed nor would I have learnt the things I have been privy to because of Twitter.
My blogs are shared for the world to see by fellow Tweeters – some competitors, some journalists, some just avid supporters of women, entrepreneurs and marketers.
Long ago, I realized that Twitter isn’t a one way street. I watched as an associate pumped up their Twitter followers through bought platforms and following and unfollowing, only to then go back and delete all the people they were following to appear to be “famous” “important” and somewhat “pathetic” in my books. I know it is harsh to say the latter, but Twitter is about engagement and relationships. It gives us all freedom to express whatever we feel, when we feel like it.
It also allows us to “push our barrow” without ridicule and to share our successes. Often, for me anyway, it gives us a voice to share our views on marketing and business.
I don’t know what the statistics are today on how many of our leads have derived from Twitter, but at one stage it was one sale a week. That means to our business $24,000 per week. I couldn’t have been more excited about how well this simple platform was performing.
Marketing Eye totals 34,500 followers over two accounts: @marketingeyeaus and @marketingeyeus
We engage with people, thank them where possible for following and ensure that we treat our followers and supporters as friends who deserve our respect and support. We follow back every person following our company (except strippers and unsavoury types).
Here are 3 Ways To Tweet Your Way To Success
1. Be authentic:
Don’t try to always be “up” because its just not believable. If you want to tweet with real people and not robots or fake accounts, then say things that have meaning and share a part of you in some way.
2. Be respectful:
I have had trolls come my way, but by being polite back to them, they immediately got off the case. I think too often people succumb to fighting back rather than just either respecting that someone else has a difference of opinion or are just plain “mean” or “jealous” and moving on, or ignoring what deserves to be ignored. Respect is also saying to yourself: if someone of interest is following you then you should respect them enough to follow them back.
3. Mix it up a bit:
If you are there for business then every now and again, inspire those who are following you or share something – anything! An experience, an opinion or words of wisdom according to you. Real followers love this!
