How marketers climb the corporate ladder fast

When I started out my career in the early 90’s, I wanted to be a marketing manager by the time I was 30 years old. That was my expectation and the goal I worked towards.

There are many ways a marketer climbs the corporate ladder fast, but for those whose family don’t own the business, are not as connected as they could be, or simply have not done a good job of showing worth, there is hope.

The World Incubator - Not for Profit

The World Incubator is a not-for-profit business incubator based in Wherry House, Charters Towers. Modelled on incubators in the USA, the philosophy of The World Incubator is to develop business ideas and take them to the world, employing local people.

The World Incubator aims to help local communities in the Charters Towers region grow their and start-up businesses from the idea stage to commercialisation. Each incubator participant has access to mentoring, education, training, development and marketing to help them develop their business ideas and take them to ‘The World’ stage.

Marketing Eye worked with The World Incubator to create a marketing strategy that focuses on a clean look and feel that directly reflects what their brand stands for. Outsourced marketing through Marketing Eye also allowed the not-for-profit to create a modern and easy-to-navigate website that provides an optimal user experience for potential users making it that much easier to contribute to the cause.

Only recently, I came back to manage the Marketing Eye business, something I haven't done in more than 6 or 7 years.

It's a daunting task because all of a sudden you have responsibility and there are new ways in which you need to navigate how you lead the team, and take them where you want to go, but also, where they want to go.

As an ex-journalist, interviewing people of all backgrounds and walks of life is second nature to me. I've interviewed police officers, politicians and met the Prime Minister, but have never been asked to have a sit-down interview with my former news organisation's owner (who would be Rupert Murdoch himself - eep!).

Today, I'm on day two in the marketing industry and have been given the chance to pick the brain of Marketing Eye founder, Mellissah Smith – it’s a slightly daunting ask, especially when you consider that she was little older than I was when she first branched out and went solo in her first agency.

“I’ve been in marketing for 20-odd years and was 25 when I started my first agency – what inspired me to start was an account opportunity falling in my lap,” Mellissah said.

Bang for your buck

(BRW, the Marketing Issue, Oct 20-26, 2011)

It needn’t take a huge budget to market a business. All it takes is time and little forethought. Report: Georgina Dent

Many years ago a manager commented off the cut that Marketing Eye Chief executive Mellissah Smith “worked in sales”. Smith was irritated by the description until she decided he’d made a valid point. “I was quite annoyed about him saying marketing was the same as sales but they actually do go hand in hand,” she says. “Marketing creates the forum for sales to occur.”

Ok, I was there, all glammed up with a beautiful orange silk summer dress from Gail Elliott’s Little Joe in Toorak styled with accessories that made me feel like I was not in Portsea, but was in fact, swanning around at the Polo in South of France’s St Tropez.

All by myself

It’s a lonely existence out there for an entrepreneur, particularly one that owns a business all by themselves without a business partner to share their highs and lows. There is nothing like sharing information with someone who is there living and breathing the same things you are.

Small Businesses Soaking Up The Sun

If I look happy – I am! Who wouldn’t be sunning themselves in Byron Bay? For 3 days, I have soaked up the sun, shopped, swam, ate, drank and done business with local Byron Bay residents.

Here I go blogging away, tweeting about my experiences, updating my facebook with “having a great day” and uploading photographs of a boozy night out with the gals.
