Does Modern Marketing Mean 100% Digital?

The world is ever-evolving. Humans are no longer in the place we used to be five years ago. And marketers must hop on that train towards the unknown future. Every day, a new device, a new technology, or a new social media platform comes into being. But does that mean modern marketing is turning fully digital? The answer is no. No matter how advanced we are with our tech, there is always a place for the non-digital world.

A callout to me personally via Twitter direct message has led to a position as a panellist on a two-hour television show on Friday nights on Sky Television, a Rupert Murdoch owned station. Sky TV is not dissimilar to Fox TV. The politically inspired television show is one of the best I have seen, with a substantial cross-section of panellists, all with a point of view that resonates with the audience.

Should you take up a new opportunity or not?

We live in a world where many people are quick to jump to conclusions and ascertain their own opinions. This has led to a rather volatile and uninformed movement by the younger generation. Being a millennial myself, I want to examine why this shift is taking place and how we can turn this ship around.

I am not a storyteller in the sense that I engage a crowd through great wit and charm. I am no Gatsby and certainly not great. I have friends who command an audience – but that is not in my nature to do so. I like to listen so I can come back to my desk and write stories about what I have heard.

That is not to say that I don’t do public speaking - I am quite reasonable when on topic - but I am a different kind of storyteller: more hack than raconteur and certainly no Peter Ustinov – the greatest raconteur that ever lived. The Fault in our Stars author John Green says it best about many writers, “Writing is something you do alone. Its a profession for introverts who want to tell you a story but don't want to make eye contact while doing it."

Like many companies, Marketing Eye is about to embark on a PR campaign to communicate to the wider audience our expansion plans for the US market.

With new recruit, Marketing Manager Chanta Waller, having taken up the post in our Atlanta office, we have spent a few minutes brainstorming our media release.

Is it newsworthy enough? Who should it go to? What variations should we do? What are our expected outcomes?

How to create your own media

It was eight years ago when I first came up with the idea of producing a custom magazine for my business Marketing Eye.

I put it in my business plan and had every intention of doing it.
As the print media continues to shrink and decline, brand journalism is the buzzword on our industry's lips as content marketing evolves into engaging newsroom-style messaging.

The term "brand journalism" has existed for close to a decade, with Larry Light using the term in 2004. At the time, he was chief marketing officer at McDonald's and claimed that mass marketing no longer worked, introducing brand journalism as a method of recording "what happens to a brand in the world".

In the past week, we have been organising media interviews for a financial services firm. Our inhouse PR expert is very talented and well-connected, and has organised more than 13 interviews for an international money markets expert. The thing is, this was done, all without using their media kit. Why? Because it is a bit out of date and doesn't represent the company and how forward thinking the company really is.

This got me thinking. What should go in a press kit (or media kit) in 2012? Are local companies in Atlanta and Georgia for that matter, ensuring that their media kits are up to date? Do they really know how to make a media kit stand out from the crowd? Is there someone in Atlanta helping them with their media kits?

Here are some things you should be considering;

Marketing Eye was approached by Spanish Doughnuts with the view to promoting the first annual “World Churro Eating Competition” to be held at Melbourne’s Federation Square. With just over two weeks to go before the event date it was full steam ahead from the off-set. Marketing Eye met with Michael Aldemir, Director of Spanish Doughnuts Australia for an initial brain storming session, from here the promotional strategy was developed and implemented.
